Cambodia
Cambodia is struggling to regain some
political and economic stability after almost total destruction by the Communist
Khmer Rouge in the 1970's. Most of a generation was wiped out in the killing
fields, but a new generation is seeking God. Some have already found peace and
security in Jesus Christ and want to study the Bible. Others are searching,
desiring for someone to show them the way to a new life in Jesus Christ.
Vision Fulfilled
On May 6, 2002, the leadership of the Light for Living Bible
Training Center was placed in the hands of a Cambodian staff. Chakreya Choun is
now the director. Samphors Hang is her assistant and Savet Nuon is guard and
maintenance man. Working together, these three are preparing souls in Cambodia
for yet another harvest. They have daily been reaching out to the people of
Kampong Chhnang through the Bible Training Center which provides a safe place
for people of all ages to read Christian books, watch Bible videos, and study
English. They are taught Christian songs, and games are an added attraction. The
Center is located on the main road through Kampong
Chhnang, which is about two hours north of
Phenom Penh.
Lending Library
In addition to Bible teaching and English
classes the center has a lending library with a good supply of books, videos,
etc. which the local people can check out.
Light for Living Bible Training Center
New converts are discipled and national
workers are being trained to reach and teach their own people. Both Buddhists
and Muslims have found new life in Jesus Christ. It is the goal of the Bible Training Center to help them become mature Christians able to share their faith
with their fellow countrymen. The translation of Bible studies into Khmer, the
national language, is being undertaken. The fact that these people were born
into a non-Christian culture without any concept of our Triune God, the atoning
sacrificial death of Jesus Christ or salvation by grace alone, requires s
special kind of Bible study. Our goal is not to change their culture, or plant
Western type churches, but to present the Good News that Jesus died as a
sacrifice for their sins. In a sense, we seek to present the Gospel in a
Cambodian basket, carried by Cambodians in whom the character of Jesus and love
of God is manifested. We believe that it is very important that local churches
be established in homes or simple structures, led by Cambodian pastors, not
foreign missionaries. We believe the foreign missionaries’ place is in the
background, teaching and training. There is no other Bible training center in
the area. Therefore, we see the Light for Living Bible Training Center as vital
to the establishment of Bible based churches in the area.
